Russia to start punishing for reading content on the Internet

by User

Russian authorities are preparing to take the most serious step in censorship and combating dissent since 2022.
Amendments have been submitted to the State Duma introducing fines for searching for “extremist content” on the Internet.
This will be the first law in Russian history that punishes not for creating or distributing content, but simply for consuming it. It will come into force on September 1. Human rights activists predict street police raids with checks of citizens’ smartphones.

We would like to add: given the popularity of denunciations in Russia, one should be prepared for the fact that vigilant fellow citizens may write a denunciation against any reader of the “wrong” news. Be careful!
