Return of Names — Global Day of Remembrance on October 29

by Olga Timofeeva

“Return of Names” is an annual remembrance event honoring the victims of Soviet terror. On October 29, people in many countries around the world gather to read aloud the names of those shot or repressed by the Soviet state — and to see one another.

In 2024, “Return of Names” took place in 45 countries and 141 cities. The organizer of the event — the Memorial Society — again invites people to hold the event at memorial sites linked to the history of state crimes, or to join it online. Join “Return of Names” wherever you are!

How to participate?

The simplest way is to join an event near you, if one is being held. You can check whether an event will take place nearby in the “Cities 2025” section. At the event you will be given printed names; all you need to do is wait your turn and read them aloud.

Today, potential participants have several ways to join the “Return of Names” event: attend a reading or organize one yourself, carry out other memorial practices, support the organizers with a donation, become a volunteer, or spread the word about “Return of Names” on your social media. Choose the option that suits you — and take part!
